[Submit Your Suggestions] [Suggested Reading]

Suggestions for Implementing this Fulcrum Point

  • Leave room for Contrition, Confession and Brokenness in your services.
    • Celebration will always get the Lion's Share of the time, but give some time to repentance, deep prayer and confession of sin during the service.
    • Leaders should model the life of confession.
    • Read Teri's Story, exceprted from Future Church, p. 135-7
    • Don't create an atmosphere of "Mandated Happiness."  Do people have to be happy to come to your church or can they be whatever they are at the time.
    • Don't only use music in a major key.  Do some "cranky" music.  Remember, there is a whole book in the Bible named "Lamentations"  Why not do some lamenting?
  • Avoid "cliché" solutions and easy answers.
    • Listen to Jack Allen talk about the importance of not trying to have all the answers.
    • Listen to Dieter Zander talk about the importance of not over simplifying life.
    • Before you preach a "how-to" sermon, make sure you can really do what you are saying you can do.
  • Allow leaders to step down from their pedestals and to include themselves among those needing God’s Grace.
    • Listen to Chris Kratzer talk about the imporance of church leaders being real.
    • Leaders shouldn't be the hero of every story they tell.  They're human--they need to be real and transparent.
  • Allow leaders to be themselves.
  • Listen to Mark Driscoll talk about how being real is not an excuse for sin.
